I quit the rat race in 2002 and bought a smallholding in North Devon. I started off with chickens and gradually worked my way up to pigs. I grew various vegetables and fruit with varying success. The smallholding covered 2 acres in all, though that included the outbuildings. The actual usable land was probably about 1 acre. I’ve now downsized, at least in terms of the house size, and moved to a bungalow with a 2 acre field. I moved during a Covid lockdown, which had it’s own challenges! The bungalow hadn’t been lived in for four years, so it has taken up most of my time for the last year and a half getting it how I want it. Still got plenty of decorating yet to do, but the end is at least in sight. The only animals I’ve got at the moment are 10 ducks, mostly elderly, and two aging barn cats, not forgetting my two nutty dogs.

Hi Ruth,
Hope you are well. Not sure if you remember me but I stayed (wwoofed) at your lovely smallholding in 2008, almost as a wee nipper. I had an awesome time. My girlfriend of 18 months+ is a South Molton girl but I could not remember for some considerable time where it was I stayed with you near Great Torrington whenever she asked. This was despite being reminded of the countryside around your site every time I visit North Devon. I’ve just this minute found your blog and so thought I would leave a message. I hope you still have lots of ducks, chickens and formidable bacon n duck egg breakfasts every morning!
All my best wishes and warmest regards,
Alex
Apologies, I’ve only just found your comment! Goes to show how good I am at social media, I don’t think! I’ve now moved, but only about a mile away as the crow flies.
